Can you enjoy HiFi Rush if you suck at rhythm games?
As much as I loved Metal Hellsinger, it hammered home the fact that I suck at keeping the beat in a rhythm game. But there was one line about HiF Rush that stuck out to me: players are rewarded for keeping the beat, but they’re not punished if they don’t. Aside from a philosophical debate in my head over the duality of reward and punishment it did give me some hope I could enjoy this game.
So I tried it out. And yes there are several ways this game makes it easier to enjoy for the rhythmically challenged. First of all the beat is more prominent. There are visual cues everywhere. The world is alive and bumping and jumping to the beat.
All your attacks happen on the beat even if you press the button at the wrong time. It just does more damage to stay on beat. This means the sound of your weapon smashing into a robot’s face happens on the beat, every time, making it easier to get in rhythm.
Another way the beat can be more prominent is that you can turn on a meter in the UI that helps you see the beat.
And if all else fails, throw that game into story mode, do your best, and I’m sure even the worst beat-keeper will be able to enjoy this beautiful, original, and silly game.
