Preview // Sea of Stars

Does the Sea of Stars demo live up to the hype? A demo just dropped on Switch and it felt like firing up a Super Nintendo game. If you’re a fan of Chrono Trigger or other 90s-era Japanese RPGs, you know I mean that in the best way.

The combat was interesting to me with just enough challenge. Battles are turn-based but they happen quickly and smoothly. There’s very little mana to work with and even fewer magic spells to cast so far, but there’s some interesting stuff going on like a boomerang attack that takes real-time timing to keep alive for extra damage.

The demo is about an hour long, and it doesn’t tell you much about the story but you do get to see some variety. There’s a taste of world exploration, a fishing minigame, and some puzzle solving mixed in with the combat.

From just the demo, it’s hard to tell how well the combat and story will hold up several hours in. Will we care about the story and its characters? Will the combat become too repetitive? We won’t know until August, but I’m already excited to find out. It comes out in August on Switch, PC, and Playstation and you can grab the demo now on Switch.
