This one hit me right in the Fire Emblem brain: Beaten Path is a turn-based tactics RPG from Peacebreak Studio, channeling Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics — but trading the usual square grid for hex. And yes, I’ll die on this hill: hex grids just give you way more angles to flank and defend than a square board ever will.
Visually it’s gorgeous: painterly, hand-illustrated environments paired with full anime-style character art and animation. There’s a time-loop mystery baked into the story too; you’re piecing together a forgotten war and your own buried role in it.
It’s Kickstarter-funded, and just this month got picked up for Playstation, Xbox, and Switch on top of PC. It’s still deep in development and there’s no release date yet, but it’s sitting right near the top of my wishlist. (website)
