Look, I’ll be upfront with you — soulslikes are not my thing. I’m bad at parrying, I’m impatient with defensive combat, and I die in embarrassing ways. But sometimes a game comes along that makes me want to get better, and Valor Mortis is one of those games.
This is the first first-person soulslike of its kind — think Dark Souls meets the Napoleonic Wars, but you’re actually in the helmet. You play as William, a soldier of Napoleon’s army, dragged back from a battlefield grave with a mysterious plague running through your veins. You’re struggling to survive, but you’re also uncovering a conspiracy that could end humanity.
It’s from One More Level, the team behind Ghostrunner, and just from the footage alone you can see that same kinetic intensity — parries, dashes, visceral finishers, supernatural abilities — all through first-person. It looks brutal in the best way.
There is a free demo on Steam right now as part of Steam Next Fest, and it includes two sections — one from the opening of the game and one from much later, so you actually get a taste of what a late-game build and boss fight feel like. That’s pretty rare for a demo. The link is in the description.
No price yet, no hard release date yet — but that trailer that just dropped is supposedly revealing the release window, so check that out too.
Wishlist it. Download the demo. That’s the move right now.
