Tactical Breach Wizards Review — The Best Writing in a Game You Haven’t Played

What if SWAT teams used magic? And what if the writing was better than most TV shows you’re watching right now?

Tactical Breach Wizards is a turn-based tactics game where you lead a squad of wizards in kevlar through room after room of enemies. And yes, before you ask — it’s exactly as fun as that sounds.

The tactical gameplay is sharp. Every wizard has a unique kit, and the real satisfaction is finding how those abilities chain together. There’s also a rewind mechanic, so you can just try stuff—which means you can play this as a hardcore puzzle OR just chaos your way through each room. Both are valid, and both are fun.

But here’s the thing nobody tells you going in: the writing makes the game. The dialogue is Douglas Adams-level sharp. Magic exists in the modern world, and the writer actually thought through what that means, without taking itself too seriously.

There’s a doctor character who heals her patients by killing them and bringing them back from the dead. There’s a balance of thoughtful world building and complete absurdity that I can really sink my teeth into. I would read a novel about these people. I would watch the show, for sure, if that sort of thing ever existed.

My only real gripe? You’re breaching rooms, and… that’s the game. Room after room. It gets more layered as you unlock new abilities, but the mission variety is pretty thin. The story deserves bigger setpieces.

Also — Steam only. Which is criminal, because this would be perfect on Switch with touch controls.

But all in all, Tactical Breach Wizards knows exactly what it is, does it brilliantly, and somehow wrote some of the best cutscene dialogue I’ve seen in years.
